Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Extraction Systems in Metalworking

Welding fumes are captured most effectively directly at the source, for example with extraction arms, capture hoods, or integrated extraction solutions at the workstation. This helps prevent emissions from spreading throughout the facility. Specialized welding fume filters are used for filtration.

When welding unalloyed or low-alloyed steels, standard filter solutions are often sufficient. For high-alloy materials, such as chromium-nickel steels, stricter requirements apply to filtration performance and system design. If the technical and regulatory requirements are met, optional air recirculation can also support energy savings. For multiple welding stations, centralized, modular filtration systems offer clear advantages.

Depending on the material and particle size, metal dust can be combustible or explosive. That is why extraction technology in metalworking must be precisely matched to the specific application. Important criteria include dust type, explosion class, Ex zoning, and the requirements of the ATEX directives.

For materials such as aluminum, only appropriately certified extraction systems may be used. Grounding and equipotential bonding help reduce the risk of electrostatic charging as a potential ignition source. Depending on the material, separate collection may also be required to prevent mixing and unwanted reactions. Additional protective measures such as rupture discs, explosion suppression, or spark extinguishing systems further increase system safety. Regular cleaning is equally important to minimize dust buildup and the associated risks.

Metal chips are generated primarily during machining processes such as turning, milling, or sawing. To capture them reliably, extraction systems must be robust and high performing, with the ability to safely collect larger or heavier particles as well.

For individual machines and small to medium extraction volumes, compact dust collectors or machine-mounted solutions are well suited. In larger production environments with multiple extraction points, centralized filtration systems are often the better choice. Powerful industrial vacuums are ideal for cleaning floors, machines, and work areas after production. This allows deposited metal chips to be removed safely and efficiently.

A centralized extraction system is especially useful when multiple machines or workstations in metalworking need to be connected at the same time. Compared with many stand-alone units, centralized systems are often more cost-effective, more space-efficient, and easier to maintain. Filter monitoring and overall system control can also be managed more efficiently from one central location.

In addition, centralized extraction systems offer high scalability when production capacity grows, or additional extraction points need to be integrated. Further benefits include improved energy efficiency, noise reduction, and the potential integration of heat recovery. If low noise exposure is a priority, a properly insulated centralized system installed outside the production hall is recommended.

Grinding generates fine grinding dust or metal dust, which may also be explosive depending on the material. Milling, by contrast, tends to produce fine to coarse metal chips. As a result, the extraction technology must always be matched to particle size, material type, and process requirements.

For multiple workstations, a centralized, modular filtration system can be an efficient solution. During the planning phase, it should also be assessed whether oil mist and emulsion mist separation for coolants and lubricants is additionally required at turning, grinding, and milling machines. The result is an extraction system designed to meet the demands of modern metalworking in a way that supports both process reliability and cost-efficient operation.

AL-KO Extraction Technology offers high-performance extraction systems for a wide range of metalworking applications, from welding fumes and metal dust to metal chips. What matters is not only the reliable capture of fumes, dust, and chips, but also a holistic approach to safety, energy efficiency, and scalability. The result is customized extraction solutions that can be precisely aligned with processes, materials, and operational requirements.
